Dental emergencies can occur at any time and are most often caused by tooth decay that has affected the nerve of the tooth: the pain can be very sharp and cannot be relieved by any painkiller: the only way to stop the pain is for the dentist to use a local anaesthetic to open the dental pulp (the cavity where the nerve is located) and the pain will be relieved immediately.

It may also be an abscess, tooth fracture or expulsion (following a fall, for example)
